What is meant by intermodal transport, and what is it used for?

Intermodal transport is widely used when transporting more significant quantities of goods in one container to a final destination. The cargo isn’t further handled, meaning it is not deconsolidated from one container into several other ones, but instead, it stays in the same container. The container can change between different modes of transport according to the needs and requirements.
