What does demurrage mean in shipping?

The importer usually needs to pay the demurrage fees if they do not unload and move the goods within the agreed time. Every terminal or carrier has specific charges, and they vary accordingly. The amount increases as the cargo stay longer. The demurrage charges are related to the container’s period at the terminal.
