Italian address format explained
The recipient’s information on the Italian shipping address is divided in different lines, from 3 to 5, depending on the case and the type of shipment.
To avoid problems upon delivery, make sure to write down the Italian address using the following format:
- Recipient details. Full name or company name.
- Additional recipient information (optional line)
- Street name and house number
- Postcode, city, and province abbreviation
- Country. Only for international shipment.
Additional information in the Italian shipping address
The second line of the Italian address can include additional information relevant in case of shipments to businesses or when the recipient’s name is not on the doorbell.
Address format when shipping to Italian businesses
When addressing a letter or a parcel to a business/company, you can add the contact person or more details about the recipient on the second line.
The first line of the address will be used for the company name, and the second line will have the term C.A. (= courteous attention) followed by the name.
What to write when the recipient’s name is not on the doorbell/mailbox?
If the recipient doesn’t have their name on the doorbell or mailbox, you have to specify this information.
The Italian address format requires that you write this additional information on the second line, preceded by the word “presso” (= at).
Codice di Avviamento Postale (CAP): the Italian postal code
The Italian postal code is called CAP and is an essential part of the shipping address.
When writing the shipping address for a delivery in Italy, make sure to insert the correct 5-digit CAP before the city or town name.
To find the postal code to write in the Italian address, you can use Poste Italian CAP searching tool.
Province in the Italian shipping address
An important and unusual detail about Italian shipping addresses is the province code. To correctly write the province code in the Italian address, you need to follow these rules:
- The code consists of 2 letters, except for Rome.
- Both letters must be capitalised.
- You can opt to write the code between brackets.
- The province must be after the city or town, on the same line.
In the following table, you can find the code for each Italian province.
