Croatia is well-known for its picture-perfect coastal towns and stunning beaches. The Croatian capital, however, seems to be overlooked. The truth is, there is a lot to do in Zagreb, which means that even if you are only passing by (as Zagreb is the perfect base to explore the rest of the country), you should not be disappointed with the city. And luckily enough, we’re here to help you decide what to do in Zagreb.
What to do in Zagreb
Let’s start with the basics – Trg Bana Jelačića is where everyone meets. You should recognise it easily thanks to the statue of Jelačić himself. But this noted army general has not always been around – his statue was actually removed by Josip Broz Tito in 1947, and then brought back over 40 years later. Not only the turbulent history of the square makes it worth your while, though. From there, you can easily start exploring the city, which makes it a great starting point of your trip.
Now, are you searching for something unique to do in Zagreb? Museum of Broken Relationships is the answer. It may seem a little depressing at first, but it can also turn out to be therapeutic. Behind each object, there is a meaningful story. Read them all and try not to shed a tear.
After such an experience, you may need a beer or two. Head to Medvedgrad. It started as the first mini-brewery and beer hall in the city, but rumour has it that now you can order a whole keg of beer, accompanied by delicious meals. Plus, the beer served there is not filtered, which means no preservatives or artificial ingredients inside your drinks. How cool is that?
If you want some peace and quiet afterwards, check out Zrinjevac. It forms part of so-called Green Horseshoe, a U-shaped combination of lively squares and restful parks. Besides, just a short walk from there, you can find a Mecca for all jazz lovers, Bacchus. Apart from quality music, this bar offers a decent selection of wines (or rakija!) and unique ambient.
Nearby, there is also a place suitable for hopeless caffeine addicts. Cafe U Dvorištu may be known mostly for its fair-trade Ethiopian coffee, but this cosy place serves a range of drinks, which seems to attract many local artists and poets. Speaking of, you should definitely visit Krivi put in search of the more alternative side of Zagreb. If you’re lucky, you can even witness a concert, but let’s be real – loud music, cheap drinks, and relaxed atmosphere are what truly matters in here.
If you’re more into museums and culture, check out Technical Museum Nikola Tesla to see a huge planetarium and a few space ships. Afterwards, you may feel a little hungry, though. But worry no more, because Pizzeria Karijola is just around the corner – and it happens to serve the best Italian-style pizza in town.
The last tip on what to do in Zagreb would be simply to stay a little longer. If you find yourself in the Croatian capital on Sunday, you should pay a visit to Britanski trg. This is where the past meets present, as the antique and collectibles fair takes place. Meet the locals and hear extraordinary stories of some quirky objects before you embark on your journey back home.
Another brilliant option in case you wonder what to do in Zagreb (or nearby, in this case), is to visit one of the most beautiful resting places in Europe, Mirogoj. The main building, as well as the church and many monuments around the cemetery, are real masterpieces. And if you ever have a chance, visit Mirogoj during All Saints’ Day and admire its beauty in the candlelight.
And last but not least – Jarun. For many years now, it has been a perfect place for relaxation by day, and party by night. Besides, every June it hosts more and more popular INmusic festival, which should be a good enough reason to check it out.
