Not much time to visit Brussels? Worry no more. Walking around the Belgian capital has never been easier. The centre of European culture and institutions has much more to offer than just excellent beers and chocolate. And thanks to our travel video, you can now discover things to do in Brussels without leaving your apartment. But, if you decide to do so (which you should definitely consider), you might as well check out our detailed guide to Brussels. Take this journey with us!
Visit Brussels
First stop, the Leopold Quarter, a district completely dominated by the institutions of the European Union. Nonetheless, the European headquarters is not the only place to visit in this area. Head to Maison Antoine for a truly Belgian experience and try typical, double-fried French (Belgian?) fries. The little shop may seem very ordinary, but the quality of food definitely isn’t.
If you already need some rest, stop by Parc d’Egmont. Unless you find it, that is. This hidden park used to be private, but luckily for the visitors, is not anymore. The best features? It’s not very crowded, there is a small café and…a statue of Peter Pan. It can’t get better than this.
Besides, it’s close to the Palace of Justice, also known as Law Courts of Brussels. It was named the largest building constructed in the 19th century, which should be a good enough reason to check it out. It shouldn’t be that difficult to do it anyway – once you visit Brussels, all roads seem to lead to this magnificent landmark. And have I already mentioned the amazing view of the city? Right next to it, there’s also a free elevator that can take you “downtown” anytime.
Still looking for more great views of Brussels? Le Monts des Arts at sunset can give you exactly that. And it’s conveniently located near the intriguing Musical Instruments Museum, as well as Musée Fin-de-Siècle Museum which offers an exceptional collection of works by many renowned Belgian artists.
In any case, no trip to Brussels can be complete without passing by the Grand Place, an iconic square in the Belgian capital. And here comes the treat for all coffee addicts – Maison Corica and Aksum are just nearby. While Aksum offers a great selection of beans straight from Ethiopia, Corica allows you to choose your favourite blend from around 20 varieties available.
But if you’re not into coffee that much, choose La maison des Crêpes instead. Despite delicious pancakes with both savoury and sweet fillings, apple cider is to die for. Well, it may not be a typical Belgian lunch or dinner, but it is definitely worth trying when you visit Brussels.
Speaking of typical Belgian delicacies – apart from fries, there’s at least one more thing the country is famous for. Beer! And BrewDog Brussels is certainly a place to try some great ones. Although it offers a range of beer from forty taps, you should also try something a little bit more mainstream while you’re at it (honourable mentions include Duvel, Chimay, Delirium, Leffe and Hoegaarden, which happen to be my favourites).
The Belgian capital may not be the best party destination in Europe, but if you visit Brussels and crave some cocktails – definitely check out Mappa Mundo, a multi-floor drinking den with Latin sounds. An alternative for the evening could be Brussels Beach. Yes, you heard that one right. From now on, sandy beaches, live music, summer sports and exotic food can also be found in Brussels.
