What does “stacking pallets” mean?
Stacked pallets are those in which multiple boxes are stacked on top of each other on a pallet, allowing for efficient shipment as one joint load. In this arrangement, the carrier also has the option to place another pallet on top.
When stacking pallets for shipping, it is important to follow proper guidelines to ensure stability and safety. Pallets should be stacked evenly, with each pallet aligning securely with the one below it. This helps maintain the integrity of the stack and minimises the risk of the pallets collapsing or the cargo falling off during transport.

How to properly stack boxes on a pallet for shipping
There are a few things you should keep in mind when stacking boxes on a pallet for transport or storage:
- Keep the heaviest items at the bottom to create a stable base for the rest of the load.
- Stack the boxes close to the edges of the pallet, but not over.
- Do not make a pyramid shape. For most stability, we recommend stacking the pallet in a cubic shape instead.
- Do not stack the goods too high. If you have the boxes piled up too high, there is an increased risk that some of the packages will shift and fall over during transport.
- Strap the boxes for optimal stability.
- Know the weight limit of the pallets. Overloading can make them difficult to handle and may cause bending or breakage.

How many boxes can you stack on a pallet?
Depending on the size of the boxes you are placing, it is not recommended to exceed a height of 220 cm for Euro pallets. This dimension serves as an indicator for the safety of the goods during transport.
The Euro pallet weight is normally around 20-25 kg before loading, and the carrying capacity may vary for different types of pallets.
Keep in mind that you need to check if the pallet is in good condition, without any cracks or signs of mould.

Stacking boxes of different weights and sizes on a pallet
- If the pallet you are transporting has different package sizes and weights, place the heavier ones in the centre. Concentrating the weight in the centre promotes the required stability of the pallet.
- If you are stacking a pallet with irregular shaped items, we recommend placing them in cuboidal packages or other special boxes. This will allow you to easily secure them with straps or belts. Keep in mind that if you use an additional box for the irregular shaped items, make sure to fill the voids with cushioning material to avoid movement during transport.
- Although not recommended, an alternative approach is to attach the item directly to the pallet without using boxes. Just make sure to wrap it tightly with bubble wrap and clear pallet wrap. For a cheaper and safer option, it is best to stack boxes on a pallet.
- If your boxes have almost identical content and weight, you can follow the recommended method of stacking pallets and placing them on the bottom of the pallet.
How can I faster down-stack a pallet?
If you have a pallet consisting of multiple boxes with different contents and sizes, it can be challenging to maintain organisation when you need to down-stack the pallet. To simplify the sorting process and save time, follow these steps:
- Prepare separate containers for each specific content category you need to separate.
- As you down-stack the items from the pallet, place each box or item into the appropriate container based on its content.
